I have been on Enbrel which did not work very well, then Rituximab for one year which is the worst decision ever made as I have had no relief whatsoever except through increasing steroids.I have had a really miserable year with severe bouts of depression.

I am now faced with trying Humira ,similiar to Enbrel or the new drug Tocilizumab.

Can anyone help or had a similiar experience. I am seronegative for Arthritis and one Rheumatologist told me that Rituximab was unlikely to work well for me but my consultant disagreed!
Would be very grateful for info.

I cannot understand that after nearly four years I am no better and finding it difficult to cope.

Morning Angela

Welcome to the forum, I really am very sorry to hear what you have been through, an absolute nightmare, certainly need urgent attention. I have had RA since May 09, and now being put forward for infliximab as the Dmards have not worked. My knowledge is still very limited, you will get all the advice and support on here, it truly is a lifeline, as we all concerned for each other.

I hope now you will be able to get all the help you so need to move forward.

Best wishes Julia x

Hi Angela

Welcome to the forum. It seems along time to have RA without any real improvement, so I can understand why you feel so depressed. Is there an advice line you can ring and talk to someone? If not, maybe you could ring NRAS and ask them for advice.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Lyn

Hi Lillian,

Could your GP or rheumy nurse give you a steroid depo injection to tide you over your holidays?

Shame it doesn't have a good effect Lilian.
Would they give you some steroid tabs to cover your holiday?

Hi lilian, I've had R.A since 2004 and diagnosed with Sjogrens last month It took then a long time to diagnois me, and then i had to have a heart operation so my treatment was delayed. I was put on Methrotrexate which i had terrible side effects from, sulfalazine which was the same and Avara. None of them worked for me. They then suggested Enbrel, i was very relutant and then chnaged hospitals where at the new hospital the nurse explained to me about the drug very well. After reading some stuff on the internet I did find this medication scary, but rememeber you always hear about te worse case senario.

Anyway i had no option really as many of my joints are eroded. I had my first dose of Enbrel on Friday, the nurse comes to your house and sits with you for an hour to make sure everything is o.k. I did get myself in a bit of a panic as I've had heart problems and was scared. After the injection I felt a little bit spacy, but I think that's because i got myself in a panic.
Prior to Friday I was crippled with the pain, i could hardly walk, I had problems getting my bra and tops of as i could hardly move my hands and arms. Saturday I was able to get out of bed much easier than normal, and sunday I woke up with no pain what so ever and today is the same. on Thursday i took pictures of my swollen hands, today the swelling has gone down considerably and yesterday I noticed that i could do my apron up and get my clothes off.

I know they say it takes a couple of weeks to work, but I have noticed changes already. 2 weeks ago my ESR was 99 , it's suppose to be 0-10. Also I have not had one side effect ( touch wood) When I took Methrotrexate I would be asleep all of the next day and I felt terrible on it. with this drug I've had no side effects at all yet, but I know it's still earley days.

I'm not saying that enbrel will be the wonder drug for you as we all react differentley. You could ask to speak to the Rheuamtoid nurse and ask her to explain this drug to you.

all the best

Angela

Hi Angela k and lillian
Angela i'm not surprised you are depressed after 4 years and no relieve. I've only been diagnosed 18months and it has made me depressed. It is probably worth asking your GP for anti depressents. They aren't additive like they used to be and make a world of difference to how you feel.

I have no experience of the biologic drugs but i expect you will get lots of advise and support from the others on here that have.

Lillian when i went on holiday to Canada at Christmas my GP gave me transdermal patches (morphine) which really helped. They are great when times are really bad.

I hope you both get some help and relief soon.

Love Shirley x
